Why AQUASTAR boats are lighter
There is one quite popular question – why AQUASTAR boats are lighter than other similar boats? So, the weight of the boat depends on:
– the density of the material it is made from;
– the presence of a collapsible bottom;
– the type of material the bottom is made from.
The density of the material used for the boat influences the weight of the boat and the size of its packaging. Flat-bottomed inflatable boats are made of a special boat PVC fabric with density of 650-850g/m2. Such boats have no rigid bottom, you cannot stand in it. Rowing boats are intended for swimming in lakes, ponds and small rivers, so they don’t need high density material.
Keel boats, with sizes ranging from 3 meters, made of PVC fabric with a density of 900g/m2 and its weight only 2 kg less than a similar boat made of material with density 1100g/m2.
The biggest influence on the weight of the boat has the plywood of the deck. Moisture-proof plywood is being produced with application of moisture-proof tars. That’s why it’s so heavy. The weight of the deck is quite often heavier than the weight of the boat itself.
Rigid collapsible deck for the keel boats consist of the plywood sections, connected by aluminum longitudinal and transverse locks.

You can see that AQUASTAR boats has smaller width of the deck. That’s why it’s lighter. You are receiving two main advantages due to such design:
- Clear redans alongside of the tube ensure higher speed and more stable path in planning mode.
- The bottom of the boat naturally becomes narrower. Useful space doesn’t change. Your boat is much lighter than other same boats.
One can say that it is disadvantage – floor level becomes higher. It’s true. But increasing the height of the tube of AQUASTAR boats easily compensate this disadvantage.
Let’s have a look at one more feature influencing the weight of the keel boat: type of plywood for deck.
Special sea-type plywood soaked with water-proof tars and covered with laminate is used for the decks. Such plywood is the best material for decks and transom plates.
Water-proof plywood – is high-strength, elastic, water- and deterioration-proof material, able to compete with low alloy steel.
Such plywood is able to serve for a long time (10 – 15 years) under the conditions of sharp temperature fluctuation (from -50C to +50C), under the water and in tropical climate conditions. It is used in many industries.
It’s being used as a sheathing material for boats, yachts and ships; bulkheads, floating docks and pontoons in hydro-technical industry; in construction industry as formworks with up to 100 life cycles. Russian and Chinese – made plywood is available at the area where AQUASTAR boats are being made.
Chinese plywood is being made from the weed woods: poplar, alder etc. Sawdust and wood dust is often used there instead veneer. We don’t have another, higher quality Chinese plywood in our region yet. It is not so much moisture – proof. Poor quality of wood is compensated with chemical soaking with heavy urea resins. Such plywood is not hard, very heavy due to soaking and cheap.
Russian plywood is being produced from oak and birch. It’s hard types of wood. They have to be soaked with phenol or bakelite resins.
If you compare two units, made from Chinese and Russian plywood and weight them, you’ll see that they are almost same. But if you check the hardness of the same two units, Russian plywood is almost twice stronger. It means that twice thinner Russian plywood has the same load-bearing capacity with Chinese one.
Actually, any plywood can be used and boat will be strong enough. If you use the weed woods plywood, you have to increase the thickness of a deck. But, in order to produce strong and light boat, you have to use the plywood from hard types of wood.
AQUASTAR boats are being made from Russian plywood produced at the town of Syktyvkar. It has the following characteristics:
- tensile strength along the grain of the outer layers of plywood – not less than 30 МPa;
- the tensile strength of the statistical bending along the grain of the outer layers – not less than 55 МPа;
- shear strength for the adhesive layer after soaking in water for 24 hours or after 1 hour boiling – not less than 1,5 MPa.
